Retro Football league
I’m kicking off a brand new season on Championship Soccer based upon Roy of the Rovers, Bobby of the Blues, Jack of United, Jimmy of City and many more star players from the Tiger and Scorcher comics of the Seventies and I thought it might be fun to share with you the results over the next couple of months. I have set up four divisions based on how they were in the Seventies with Divisions One and Two having 22 teams and Divisions Three and Four having 24 teams. I hope you enjoy the outcome.

KICK-OFF
The season starts with the 1st leg of Round 1 of the European Cup and both Melchester Rovers and Everpool City are among the English clubs in action.
Melchester Rovers 0 v Sporting Alcero (Portugal) 0
Straight from the outset it’s clear Sporting have come to defend and they successfully restrict Rovers to just one really good goal scoring chance – a terrific shot by Jumbo Trudgeon that’s tipped over by the Sporting keeper. In the second-half, Roy Race went off injured and it remains to be seen how long he’s going to be out for. Geoff Giles was named Man of the Match and Melchester Rovers now have it all to do in the 2nd leg.
Nordhoven (Holland) 0 v Everpool City 2
Against Fran Brugel’s powerful Dutch side, the Blues got a terrific start as Don Westlake slotted home early in the game. In the second-half, Ashley Reed one of the Blues new boys struck a lovely low hard drive that made it 2-nil. Bobby Booth had a superb shot late in the game tipped over the bar for a corner and although Don Westlake limped off mid-way through the second-half, he was still named Man of the Match. Everpool must now be confident of making the next round.
Other notable results were:
Alvadoz (Portugal) 0 v Glenrath Celtic 6
Thamesbank 1 v Moulenne Racing (France) 0
Basilico (Portugal) 4 v Glengow Rangers 0
Reedhoven (Holland) 0 v Harding Academicals 0
Morino (Italy) 2 v Abertoon 2
Stahlberg (Germany) 0 v Flaudermitz (Germany) 5
Dynamo Dresden (Germany) 3 v Portdean County 0
AC Monza (Italy) 3 v Seaford Athletic 2
Merseaport 2 v Real Santana (Spain) 3

The next action was the 2nd leg of Round 1 of the European Cup and Melchester Rovers had Roy Race back fit and needed to win away whilst Everpool City just needed to ensure they didn’t let a 2-nil lead disappear at home.
Sporting Alcero (Portugal) v Melchester Rovers
Right from the start Rovers went on the attack and midway through the first-half Roy Race scored, much to the relief of the travelling Rover’s fans. Sporting were disappointing and Melchester controlled the rest of the game, ran out 1-nil winners and now progress through to the 2nd Round. Man of the Match was once again Geoff Giles, Melchester’s brilliant holding midfield player.
Everpool City v Nordhoven (Holland)
Nordhoven started the game brightly enough pressurising the Blue’s defence and in the first-half were easily the best team - but unfortunately right on the stroke of half time a disastrous own goal by a Nordhoven defender gave the Blues a 3-nil overall lead. Disheartened, Nordhoven didn’t rally in the second half and Everpool City saw the game out for a 1-nil victory (3-nil over the 2 legs). Man of the Match was Alan Baker the Everpool centre-half who was outstanding. Everpool now wait to hear who their opponents are in the next round.
Other notable results from the 2nd leg of the 1st Round were:
Mondliari (Italy) beating Verengen (Holland) 9-0 on aggregate.
Alvadoz (Portugal) winning 1-nil at home to Glenrath Celtic but Celtic still progress.
Moulenne Racing (France) were 1-nil up at 90 minutes against Thamesbank, the game therefore went to penalties and the French side progressed.
Harding Academicals bravely drew 1-1 with Reedhoven (Holland), but the Dutch side progressed by means of the away goal rule.
Scottish teams did particularly well with Abertoon also progressing at the expense of mighty Morino (Italy) by 2 goals to 1 and a fantastic effort by Ratch Rovers who had lost their 1st leg away at Vardennes Racing (France) 2-1 and then turned the tie around winning 2-0 at home.
Also through to the last 32 are the likes of:
Real Santana, Athletico Zamara (Spain), Solenica, Palmetto (Portugal), Levanville, Sorbonne (France), Zudderdam (Holland), Nettruno, AC Monza (Italy) & Hagenburg (Germany).

Match Day 1 saw two of the expected title contenders in Division One go head-to-head. Everpool City at home to Melchester Rovers.
Melchester started brightly and after a fierce shot by Roy Race had not been held by Blues keeper Ted Anderson the ball flew up into the air directly above the sprawling keeper only for the in rushing Roy Race to head home. 1-nil Melchester. Then on the stroke off half-time Everpool equalised, Tommy Keston danced past the Rovers’ defenders and Cat Carter to score. In the second-half a Roy Race rocket was saved brilliantly by Ted Anderson and then a goal from the most unlikely of sources – Colin Jones, Everpool’s centre-half secured the points for the home side. Everpool City 2 Melchester Rovers 1. Man of the Match was Colin Jones.
In League Division Two both Castleburn sides got off to a good start. Jimmy Chelsey scored twice as Castleburn City saw off Abbottown Albion 2-nil and not to be out done the other Chelsey, Jack scored for Castleburn United as they beat Fairydale 1-nil.

Race has now scored in the last three games. Everpool City beat Barnsea 1-0 with a goal scored by Roger Hawkins. Jimmy Chelsey was on target again for Castleburn City as they beat Millborough 1-0 and both Brian Wells and Graham Mortlake scored for Castleburn United in their 2-0 victory over top flight side Shermall Athletic. The biggest upset of the 2nd Round saw Eversea from Division Three beat mighty Merseaport 1-0.
On the scoresheet were Steve Marks (Kingsbay) his side beating Deans Park 4-0, and for Danefield United in their 3-0 against Marshness, Peter Parker, Kevin Taylor and Glen Davies all scored.

With both Peak and Slade out due to injuries Melchester Rovers travelled to Deans Park for a tricky fixture with Ainsworth and McKay as their centre back pairing. Deans Park though were disappointing and played a very defensive game being booed off the park at the end of the game. Despite having more possession Rovers couldn’t convert any of their many chances and the game finished 0-0 with big Duncan McKay being the Man of the Match. Still a point is a point.
Everpool City kept up their impressive start to the season beating Carford City 2-1 at home. Blues scored first with Don Westlake netting home only for Tommy McIntosh to pull one back for Carford. Early in the second half Blues had Alan Baker sent off but even though they were down to ten men good work by Harry Winters and Tom Spurling set up Booby Booth to score the winner.
Steve Marks was on the scoresheet again for Kingsbay as they drew 1-1 at Lenfield Town.
In Division Two, both Castleburns recorded wins with City beating Marshness 3-0 and United beating Millgate Rovers 2-0. Melchester Rover’s slick passing accounted for Cranville United. Although Rovers created chance after chance in the first half they started the second half on level terms. But then goals from Blackie Gray and Roy Race gave the Rovers a comfortable 2-0 away win and Rovers have now improved their league position. Lofty Peak back from injury was the Man of the Match.
Melboro completely outplayed Everpool City to win 2-0 with goals from Blake and Leyland. Melboro’s tricky winger David Leyland mesmerised the Blues defence who were missing Alan Baker out due to his suspension for being sent off against Carford City. Eastoke United were the days big winners beating Weston Villa 7-1.
In Division Two, Castleburn City’s blend of attacking play was too much for visitors Hawkmoor. Johnny Lea scrambled home the first then the same player had a shot rebound off the post and Jimmy Chelsey duly slotted home to make it 2-0. Late in the second-half Paddy Murphy added a third. Castleburn United without their injured playmaker Jack Chelsey made heavy weather of their game at Grantham United. Graham Mortlake scoring the only goal seven minutes from time to give Castleburn United a 1-0 win.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Danefield United went down 2-5 to Marshness and Blackport Rovers drew 1-1 with Ironcastle.
Top of the Divisions are:
Div. One – Kingsbay who beat Seaford Athletic 5-1 with Steve Marks getting a hat trick.
Div. Two – Castleburn City thanks to their 3-0 win over Hawkmoor.

Melchester Rovers win again, this time at home to Tynecaster. A beautiful cross by Mervyn Wallace was met perfectly by Roy Race who scored the only goal of a game in which Rovers dominated. Rovers now have 8 pts from 5 league games.
Everpool City got back to winning ways with Don Westlake drilling home from the edge of the penalty area to give the Blues a 1-0 victory at home against visitors Weston Villa. Everpool jumped back to the top of the table after Kingsbay were beaten 3-0 at Merseaport.
Walford Rovers beat Cranville 6-0 and Eastoke United beat Sandport 7-0.
In Division Two, Castleburn City stay top after travelling to Borough Albion and winning 4-1. Jimmy Chelsey scored their first goal and Taffy Evans on as a first half substitute scored with his first touch and then scored again with his second. Taffy’s second goal was a really good header from a excellent Trevor Scott free kick. Jimmy Chelsey added the fourth late in the game after Terry Brand had pulled one back for Borough. Castleburn United go second after a 3-0 win at home to Blackport Rovers. Wilf Stoneman netted twice and Noel Hampton got the other. Blackport Rovers have yet to win a league game this season and are at the foot of the table. Cain Gard made four truly great inspirational saves for Division Three side Oldfield United in the first half of their 3rd Round League Cup clash with the mighty Melchester Rovers. Gard saved from Roy Race, Jimmy Slade, Geoff Giles and Jumbo Trudgeon but was unable to stop Rovers taking a 1-0 lead on the stroke of half time through Blackie Gray. In fact the only player able to score past Gard was Blackie Gray who in the second half went on to score twice more, netting a hat trick, the Man of the Match award and the Match ball.
The two top teams in Division One, Everpool City and Kingsbay clashed also in the 3rd Round with Everpool winning 1-0 thanks to a great goal by Norman Flint. In the second half Kingsbay had enough chances to win the game with Micky Jordan, Joe McCaffrey and Terry Marks all going close. Kingsbay will have been disappointed.
In other 3rd Round clashes, Castleburn City beat Cashford Albion from Division Four 4-0 with Jimmy Chelsey netting a hat trick. Castleburn United played fellow Division Two side Millgate Rovers and the game went to penalties with United winning 4-3.
Terry West, former Melchester Rover’s great and now fast becoming an Eastoke United legend scored twice as Eastoke beat Forest Hill 4-0. Shocks were supplied by Eversea from Division Three who beat top side Sandport 5-4 on penalties and Mersea also of Division Three who beat top side Highwood Athletic 2-1.

Match Day Six saw Melchester Rovers travel to Carford City for what was quite a difficult game. Peter Warner and Blackie Gray went close for Rovers in the first forty-five minutes and two of Roy Race’s “Rockets” were well saved by Carford’s Ron Towers in the second half. Carford’s only threat on Rover’s goal came from midfielder Carl Hunt who got in several low shots, which Cat Carter did well to hold. The match finished 0-0 honours shared.
Everpool City were well beaten at Sandport 3-0, with the “Railwaymen’s” goals being scored by Charlie Summers, Ernie Van Else and Smudger Steele. Billy Dane scored for Highwood Athletic in their 2-0 win over Eastoke United and Oak Commoners won well away at Weston Villa 4-0.
In Division Two, Castleburn City’s 2-1 win at home to Mandover keeps them top. Taffy Evans scored twice, the second of which was a real gem of a strike from 30 yards into the top right-hand corner. Castleburn United won 2-0 at Abbottown Albion with Wilf Stoneman scoring twice and Danefield United won 5-0 at home to Borough Albion. Johnny Dexter, Peter Parker (2), Terry Burns and Dirk Kirkbridge getting the goals. Blackport Rover’s situation at the foot of the table improved thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Kingsford City. FA Cup Round 2 saw some exciting clashes with Kingsbay and Everpool City who had clashed in the 3rd Round of the League Cup meeting once again and the score was once again a 1-0 victory to Everpool. The game went into extra time and Tommy Keston grabbed the decisive goal.
Melchester Rovers were at home to Division three side Elbury Wanderers and Rovers quickly set about establishing their superiority with Roy Race grabbing the opener after a shot from Gerry Holloway had been cleared off the line. Holloway then scored with a long-range shot that bounced up wickedly over the keeper and into the net. Vernon Eliot ran through the Wanderers defence for a third goal and then Roy Race grabbed another 2 minutes from time to set the seal on a comfortable 4-0 win.
Castleburn United beat Bamford Athletic from Division Four, 3-0. United’s new boy Geordie Carrick grabbed the first goal and then a cracker from Wilf Stoneman was followed by a goal from Jack Chelsey.
Castleburn City on the other hand didn’t have it all their own way against Third Division Bilford Wanderers. Taffy Evans scored from a Jimmy Chelsey cross and then Wanderers pulled a goal back late in the second half. The game went into extra time and was settled by a 25-yard free kick from Vic Watling to give City a hard fought 2-1 win.
Most of the other games went with form except:
Danefield United beat First Division side Walford Rovers 2-0 with Kevin Taylor and Bob Baker getting the goals.
Division Three sides Mansford County and Castledene both progressed through to the next round at the expense of Division One sides Seaford Athletic and Highwood Athletic (respectively) both score lines read 1-0.

Match Day Seven and a soft point for Melboro who travelled the short distance to Mel Park home of Melchester Rovers. Rovers took the lead after the Melboro keeper failed to hold a Blackie Gray free kick and Gerry Holloway pounced on the loose ball to thump it into the back of the net. In the second half Roy Race who looked like he’d been carrying an injury went off and was replaced by Roger Dixon but instead of firing up Rovers a late equaliser by Joe Rafferty levelled the score at 1-1 and gave Melboro that soft point.
Everpool City entertained Billy Dane’s team Highwood Athletic at the EverReady stadium and the home side won 1-0 with Don Westlake getting the goal. It was an excellent game of football but there were only a few chances. A Billy Dane shot late in the second half was the nearest Highwood came to scoring but Ted Anderson tipped that over the bar.
Kingsbay travelled to Shermall Athletic and won 4-2 with goals from Steve Marks (2), Ray Barton and Mickey Jordan. Rudi Rantzberg scored twice for Tynecaster as they beat Carford City 4-1.
In Division Two, Castleburn City’s good run continued with a 5-0 drubbing of Westhill Rangers who had Gordon Stewart in goal for them and it’s not often five goals get scored past him. A Paddy Murphy goal, another from Taffy Evans and a Jimmy Chelsey hat trick all in the first half secured the points.
Castleburn United kept up their good run as well beating Forest Hill 3-1. Wilf Stoneman scoring all three for United.
Meanwhile, Danefield United had a terrible time losing 6-1 at Mandover, but Blackport Rovers have something to crow about at last winning 2-1 at Millborough with Barry Day and Len Duggan getting the goals.
Top of the Divisions are:
Div. One – Lenfield Town who beat bottom club Cranville United 3-0.
Div. Two – Castleburn City
Div. Three – Stambridge City following a 2-0 win at home to Coldmere United.
Div. Four – Freshwell Rovers who this week thumped Fordhampton 7-2.
The other game of note was in Division Three where Melchester City (who have many ex-Rovers players in their line-up) beat Thatchem United 4-0.

It was all Rovers in their game at Weston Villa. For the first forty-five Melchester Rovers played their football almost entirely in Villa’s half. On the stroke of half time they got their just rewards as Blackie Gray slotted home a low shot to give the Rovers a 1-0 lead. The second half continued in the same vain with Weston Villa rarely troubling the Melchester defence. Rovers won 1-0 and Ralph Derry was deservedly named as Man of the Match.
Man of the Match in the game between Shenton United and Everpool City was Roger Hawkins for his virtuoso display in midfield. Hawkins not only set up Bobby Booth for Everpool’s first goal but also added one himself, a fantastic shot from long-range. 2-0 Everpool.
Kingsbay lost at home, beaten by Eastoke United 4-0 and Billy Dane scored for Highwood Athletic in their 1-0 victory over Oak Commoners.
In Division Two, Castleburn City faced a big test at fellow promotion hopefuls Danefield United who had Johnny Dexter playing in midfield for them. City passed the test with flying colours running out 3-0 winners. Dusty Millar grabbed the first goal and defensive errors by the Danefield defenders allowed Jimmy Chelsey to grab the other two.
Former Melchester Rovers keeper, Walter Williams marshalled the Marshness defence so well that visitors Castleburn United couldn’t score unfortunately for Marshness neither could they and the game finished goalless.
Blackport Rovers managed another win thanks to two goals by Barry Day, beating Bridgford County 2-0.
In Division Three, Melchester City go top after a 4-2 win at Brookburn.
Top of the Divisions are:
Div. One – Lenfield Town (19pts) who won away at Seaford Athletic 1-0. Everpool City are 2nd (18pts), Kingsbay 3rd (16pts) and Melchester Rovers 7th (13pts).
Div. Two – Castleburn City (24pts), Castleburn United 2nd (20pts), Danefield United are 5th (15pts) and Blackport Rovers are 14th (11pts).
Div. Three – Melchester City (21pts) with Thatchem United 10th (14pts).
Div. Four – Freshwell Rovers were beaten 1-0 by Putsborough and have 21pts, as now do Linfield Athletic and Chaggerton.
In Scotland, Princes Park drew 0-0 away at Brellin Argyle and Princes picked up their first point of the season.

Back in Europe for the next action, which was, the 1st leg of Round 2 of the European Cup and both English teams faced Portuguese opposition.
Melchester Rovers v Garibeldo (Portugal)
This was a tight game with few scoring chances. Rovers took the lead just before half time when Roy Race capitalised on a defensive error. In the second half both Roy Race and Geoff Giles had to be taken off as the result of some poor tackles by the Garibeldo players. Late in the game Blackie Gray must have thought he’d put the tie beyond doubt only to see his shot rocket off the post. The game ended 1-0 to Rovers, who still face a difficult away leg.
Everpool City v Basilico (Portugal)
A great game of attacking football was how the neutrals would sum this one up, however for Everpool who led 1-0 at half time thanks to a brilliant goal by Tommy Keston, they will have been disappointed with the overall result as Basilico equalised when Ted Anderson failed to hold a fierce shot from Juan Roberta and little Mirra thumped the ball home. 1-1 and the Blues have it all to do in the second leg.
Other notable results from the 1st leg of the 2nd Round were:
Nettruno of Italy beating Real Catania from Spain 4-0.
Reedhoven from Holland beating Palmetto of Portugal 5-0.
The all German tie which ended Dynamo Dresden 2 Flaudermitz 3.
Abertoon losing at home to Athletico Zamara of Spain 4-0.
Mondliari of Italy beating Scottish side Ratch Rovers 2-0.
Italian giants AC Monza’s 5-0 victory against Hagenburg of Germany,
And AC Gironde of France beating Glenrath Celtic 2-0.

Sandport are not known as a dirty side but in their league match against Melchester Rovers they resorted to some strong-arm tactics. In the 12th minute Roy Race was brought down on the edge of the penalty area and had to leave the field injured. Up stepped Blackie Gray to fire home from the resulting free kick. Melchester Rovers completely dominated the game without looking like scoring again and right at the end of the game Cat Carter made a great save from Charlie Summers to deny Sandport a point. A tough match, but three valuable points for Rovers who are now into the top six for the first time this season.
Everpool City playing at home against Kingsbay were on top throughout the first half with Ashley Reed more than once going very close to giving the Blues the lead. But in the second half it was a different story with Kingsbay being driven on by their captain supremo Terry Marks and it was no surprise when Ray Barton scored to give Kingsbay a well-deserved 1-0 away win.
Elsewhere in Division One, Terry West the former Melchester Rovers star was again on the scoresheet helping Eastoke United to a 3-1 victory at Thamesbank. Oak Commoners put 6 past Shenton United for no reply and Billy Dane’s side Highwood Athletic won 2-1 at Deans Park.
In Division Two, Castleburn United travelled to Hawkmoor and started really brightly with Martin Frith running the midfield. Wilf Stoneman rifled a screamer into the back of the net to give United a 1-0 lead and when the same player was brought down in the box up stepped Jack Chelsey to take the penalty, only to have his shot saved. Now down to 10 men Hawkmoor did try and get back into the game but United’s captain Roger Hughes was outstanding and United were good value for their victory.
Castleburn City entertained Ringhurst and the game was played at a frantic pace. Ringhurst had a player sent off for a bad tackle early in the first half and Taffy Evans took the free kick which struck the post, the ball rebounded to Paddy Murphy whose shot was blocked, a block which fell kindly to Jimmy Chelsey who calmly tapped the ball into the back of the net. Later in the match, Johnny Lea then set off on a dazzling run down the right wing and scored with a lovely shot. In fairness to Ringhurst their heads didn’t drop and Piet Van Maldik pulled one back 10 minutes from time. Full-time score Castleburn City 2 Ringhurst 1.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Danefield United beat Westhill Rangers 6-0 with the goals coming from Johnny Dexter, Peter Parker (3) and Glen Davies (2) and Blackport Rovers lost away to Landchester Town 1-0.
Top of the Divisions are:
Div. One – Lenfield Town who beat Merseaport 4-0.
Div. Two – Castleburn City
Div. Three – Melchester City who beat Chidsea 6-0 with ex-Melchester Rovers player Chalkie White scoring twice.
Div. Four – Chaggerton despite only drawing 0-0 at home to Holverton.

Billy’s Amazing Boots put paid to Melchester Rovers recent good run of results. Billy Dane playing in his first season at Highwood Athletic is getting amongst the goals and he scored twice at the Hayfields as Highwood beat Melchester Rovers 3-0. Nobby Frost added the third goal for Highwood and Billy Dane who was voted Man of the Match missed a great opportunity near the end of the game to get his hat trick.
Everpool City run of good form continued against Stonewall Jackson’s Thamesbank. Tommy Keston, the veteran Everpool striker scored the only goal of the game at the EverReady Stadium. Stonewall Jackson the Thamesbank player/manager was named Man of the Match but he found that to be little consolation.
Also in Division One, Drifter Donaldson scored six as Carford City beat Weston Villa 9-0 and Kingsbay kept up their good run with a 1-0 victory over Oak Commoners.
In Division Two, at the Castleburn Stadium, United beat Borough Albion 2-0. Jack Chelsey superbly scored the first goal and Wilf Stoneman added the second after a goal-keeping error. At the Dale, away side Castleburn City created lots of chances against Otterburn albeit Taffy Evans scored the only goal of the game direct from a free kick.
Danefield United beat Ringhurst 2-1 away with Kevin Taylor and Peter Parker getting the goals and Blackport Rovers collected all three points thanks to a Barry Day goal against Fairydale.
Top of the Divisions are:
Div. One – Lenfield Town who won 4-0 at Molton United.
Div. Two – Castleburn City
Div. Three – Melchester City who won away at Elbury Wanderers 2-0 with goals from veteran striker Cliff Wilson and their new boy wonder Cosmo Washington.
Div. Four – Freshwell Rovers are back on top after beating Oldcastle 3-1.
Tich Robinson scored for Thatchem United as they beat Cookborough 1-0 in Div. Three.
Up north in Scotland, Princes Park picked up their second point from five league games drawing 0-0 at home with Dundonald Rangers.

The FA Cup dream is over for the Blues. In Round 3 of the FA Cup, Everpool City were at home to Division Three leaders Melchester City and it was the visitors who progressed into the last 16 after their side featuring such ex-Melchester Rovers players as Tubby Morton, Ken Cooper, Derek Millar, Chalkie White and Chris Dylan outplayed and shocked mighty Everpool. Cliff Wilson scored first for Melchester City only for Tommy Keston to equalise. Then just as it looked as if the game would go into extra time Cosmo Washington scored and blew away the FA Cup dreams of the Everpool City fans.
Melchester Rovers won their Cup-tie at home to Mersea of Division Three in convincing style. Giles, Wallace and Eliot were outstanding as Rovers beat Mersea 3-0. Roy Race scored twice and Man of the Match Geoff Giles got the third.
Castleburn City faced a potentially tricky tie away to Division Four side Castleton. However a fantastic strike by Sandy Beech (in for injured skipper Trevor Scott) set City on their way. Although Castleton equalised through Len Briggs, further goals from Mike Duncan and a second from Sandy Beech gave City a 3-1 away win.
Castleburn United faced a difficult task away at Division One side Melboro. Melboro, led by Scottish international Hughie McGill, are having a good season – currently fourth in the league and although United’s midfield of Jack Chelsey, Martin Frith, Graham Mortlake and Alan Regan had an excellent game, a late goal by Joey Rafferty settled things and United crashed out of the Cup.

Shenton United’s prolific striker Terry Tyler poached two goals at Melchester Rovers this week. Within minutes of the game starting and following some poor defending by Rovers, Terry Tyler scored to give Shenton a 1-0 lead. Minutes later it was all square as Vernon Eliot equalised. Rovers changed their system to cope with Tyler and Duncan McKay in for the injured Jimmy Slade played as a sweeper and when Rovers grabbed a second goal through Blackie Gray with minutes to go all looked well for the Rovers. But then in the last second of the game Tyler scored again to make it 2-2.
Everpool City were away to Portdean County and struggled to contain Portdean’s in form striker Alfie Conn. Conn scored after Ted Anderson the Everpool keeper spilled a fierce shot from Mike McFarlane and then Conn scored again, this time a lovely solo effort to give Portdean a 2-0 lead at half-time. Everpool played with more spirit in the second-half and Bobby Booth slotted home but were unable to get the equaliser. Full-time score Shenton United 2 Everpool City 1.

The “Blues” were back on song this week with a resounding 3-1 win at home to Walford Rovers. Walford known as the “Manor Boys” due to their London connections scored first with Andy Shields getting the goal. Blues hit back quickly and after Bobby Booth and Norman Flint had both struck the post, Ashley Reed struck a perfect shot from 25 yards that just flew into the back of the net. In the second-half Walford gave away a penalty and Ashley Reed put the Blues ahead from the spot kick, although the Walford keeper did get a hand to it. Five minutes from the end Norman Flint rounded off a good day for the Blues.
Melchester Rovers travelled to Kingsbay and unfortunately never got a look in as firstly Joe McCaffrey put Kingsbay ahead and then Steve Marks added a second. Melchester did push hard in the second-half trying to get back into the game but Terry Marks, the brother of Steve, was formidable at centre-back for Kingsbay. Late in the game Roy Race did hit the post and that was the first time they looked like scoring.
Elsewhere in Division One, Eastoke United beat Lenfield Town 2-0 with Sven Jansson and Terry West getting the goals. Lenfield’s defeat and a win for Melboro against Sandport (1-0) meant that Melboro have now gone top of the league. Billy Dane was the star for Highwood Athletic scoring the only goal of their game with Carford City.
It was Derby Day in Division Two for the Castleburn sides with United entertaining City.
United without Jack Chelsey who was injured were possibly not the favourites to win this one but win they did 2-0 with Gordon Church and Norman Hampton scoring. Hampton was quite rightly named Man of the Match and United are now only 1 point behind City.
Danefield United stay third after an away win at Ironcastle 6-1. Bob Baker, Peter Parker, Johnny Baron, Kevin Taylor (2) and Johnny Dexter all got on the scoresheet. Elsewhere Barry Day scored twice for Blackport Rovers as they twice came back from being a goal behind against Millgate Rovers, the game ended 2-2.

Div. Three – Melchester City who won again this time 6-0 at home to Carsgate United.

Melchester Rovers progressed to the last eight of the League Cup after winning their 4th Round match against Ironcastle. The game was played at a fast and frantic pace with a lovely shot from Jumbo Trudgeon the nearest to a goal in the first half. In the second-half Geoff Giles who was later named Man of the Match, ghosted in from midfield to join the attack and scored a superb goal. Shortly afterwards, Roy Race missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0 and Bill Jameson hit the post for Ironcastle as they fought hard to get back into the game. With ten minutes to go Jumbo Trudgeon put the tie beyond doubt with a second goal for Melchester.
Everpool City and fellow Division One side Shenton United lined up at the EverReady stadium and it was the home side Everpool who were victorious. Norman Flint, Everpool’s tireless midfielder set up Bobby Booth to score the only goal of the game. Shenton’s Terry Tyler did force a wonderful double save from Blues keeper Ted Anderson late in the second-half.
Remarkably both Castleburn sides had excellent results against Division One teams. Castleburn City were away at Seaford Athletic and it was the home side who created most of the chances with Danny Stone going close on one occasion and Tony Price making three excellent saves from Jimmy Worth. With the score still at 0-0 the game went into extra-time and a long range “hopeful” shot by Jimmy Chelsey took a wicked bounce and ended up in the back of the net. City thereafter packed their defence and won 1-0. Castleburn United were at home to Eastoke United and although Eastoke’s midfield of Peter Taggart, Terry West and Pete Chapman dominated the game for long periods, a Gordon Church goal in the first period of extra-time settled the match.
The other results from the 4th Round were:
Melboro (Div One) 3 Bridgford County (Div Two) 0 – Jean Charles De Ketelaere scored twice.
Brampton Keys (Div Two) 1 Molton United (Div One) 2 – After extra-time.
Salthampton (Div Four) 0 Mersea (Div Three) 3
Portdean County (Div One) 0 Eversea (Div Three) 1
This means that 2 Division Three sides have made it through to the last 8, with 2 sides from Division Two (the Castleburn teams) and 4 from the top division.

Everpool City travelled to Lenfield Town to face the team managed by former Blues great Mike Sutton. Tommy Keston for Everpool had two great shots in the first half saved by the Lenfield keeper and with the game going into injury time it looked as if it would be a case of honours shared but in the 91st minute Lenfield’s Tommy Dawes scored to give Mike Sutton’s side a memorable victory.

Jumbo wades in with four goals for Melchester Rovers as they win 4-2 at Walford Rovers. Jumbo Trudgeon scored his first within five minutes as a shot from Mervyn Wallace hit the post and Jumbo pounced the quickest to put away the rebound. Trudgeon’s second came shortly after Joe Bellamy had equalised for Walford and a super strike from long-range in the second half brought about Jumbo’s hat trick. Then to round things off Jumbo scored another again a lovely shot from distance. Frank Williams netted a consolation goal for Walford minutes from time.

Castleburn United took an early lead thanks to Norman Hampton in their game away at Otterburn. But Otterburn who lost star player Kurt Braun early in the game and brought on the wonderfully named and very talented Sly Tricks worked themselves back into the game and Colin Baker netted an equaliser half way through the second half. “Rovers run riot” was the headlines following Melchester Rover’s emphatic 4-0 win at home to Portdean County. Roy Race started the ball rolling with a solo effort and then Jumbo Trudgeon popped up to score the second. Roger Dixon on as a substitute in the second half lived up to his “Supersub” tag and added a third. Whilst a daisy cutter of a free kick from Gerry Holloway rounded things off. Melchester Rovers are now putting together a string of good results and have started to steadily climb up the table.
Bobby Booth opened the scoring for Everpool in their game at home after some good work by Don Westlake. A lovely side-footed shot by Tommy Keston made it 2-0 to Everpool just before half time. Johnny Endem’s first kick of the ball after coming on as sub was a free kick which he duly floated into the top right hand off the net to make it 3-0. Which was the score at full-time.

Into Europe again for the next action, the 2nd leg of Round 2 of the European Cup and both of the surviving English teams faced trips to Portugal.
Garibeldo v Melchester Rovers
Rovers had won the 1st leg 1-0 and started in such a manner that suggested they hadn’t come to Portugal to defend. Early in the game a great run in midfield by Blackie Gray ended with a slotted through-ball to Vernon Eliot whose electrifying shot was tipped over for a corner. Then on the half-hour Rovers lost Geoff Giles, the recipient of a very nasty tackle. From the free kick Blackie Gray found Roy Race who headed the ball onto Roger Dixon and he rifled the ball home into the top of the net from short range. A great goal and Rovers were well on top. Thereafter, the Rovers’ backfour of Baxter, Derry, Peak and Slade ensured that the Portuguese side didn’t trouble Charlie ‘Cat’ Carter and Rovers ran out 1-nil winners on the night and 2-nil on aggregate. Blackie Gray was named Man Of The Match.
Basilico v Everpool City
The 1st leg of this tie had finished 1-1 and it was the home side who dominated the first half with one of their more gifted players little Mira going close on more than one occasion. At the start of the second half, Ted Anderson made a great double save from Basilico’s Brazilian star Juan Roberta to keep the Blues in the game. Then immediately the Blues counterattacked and Bobby Booth was on hand to fire City into the lead. Basilico having had the greater percentage of possession until then were rocked and Everpool controlled the rest of the tie running out 1-nil winners on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.
Other notable results from the 2nd leg of the 2nd Round were:
Nettruno of Italy beat Real Catania from Spain 1-0 (5-0 on aggregate).

Rovers good run continues. Melchester Rovers at home to high-flying Lenfield Town continued their run of good form with a convincing 2-0 win. A Roy Race cross headed home by Blackie Gray on the 21st minute set them on their way and after Lenfield Town had lost both of their superstars in the Brazilian Oscar and the German Gunther Reitel in the first half, Rovers went on to win comfortably with a fine individual goal in the second half by Jumbo Trudgeon who had waltzed round the Lenfield defenders and keeper to coolly slot home goal number two. Melchester Rovers are now up to 9th in the table, 8 points behind the leaders.
Everpool City stay 3rd thanks to their 2-0 home win over Molton United. A well struck free-kick from Simon Boswell went close early on and then in the second half, Bobby Booth capitalised on a goalkeeper error to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Booth added another. Everpool City are now only 4pts behind the leaders.
Elsewhere in Division One, Melboro stay top after beating Thamesbank 5-1. Kingsbay won 5-1 at home to struggling Weston Villa and Highwood Athletic moved into 4th place in the table after a good 4-0 win at Cranville United. Billy Dane scored once again.

The match itself was very tight with few chances although both Paddy Murphy and Dusty Millar struck the post in the first half for City. A Dale Zamora goal late in the game settled it in favour of Landchester Town. Final score Landchester Town 1 Castleburn City 0.
City’s rivals Castleburn United have now gone top of Division Two. United are the only unbeaten team in the league and won their match at home to Ironcastle in good style with Gordon Church scoring their first goal after some good play by Jack Chelsey. Rovers were brought back to earth with a bump this weekend going down 2-0 at Seaford Athletic. The Fisherman were on great form at “The Pier” and the talented Danny Stone scored in the first half to give them the lead. Mel Robbins slotted home in the second half to give them all the points. Melchester Rovers without their talismanic captain Roy Race who was unable to play due to an injury never looked like scoring and really were second best. Considering Rover’s good run of form of late this defeat was quite shocking.
Everpool City played away at Park Road South against “the Spartans”, Shermall Athletic and City bossed the game. On the 38th minute Bobby Booth fired home a lovely shot to give the Blues the lead and very late in the game substitute Willy Douglas added another to give Everpool a 2-0 victory. Everpool City have now gone second in the league.
Elsewhere in Division One, Melboro won again 2-0 at Portdean County, Kingsbay lost 4-0 at Sandport and Highwood Athletic were beaten 5-1 by Shenton United.
In Division Two, Castleburn City drew 0-0 at home with Fairydale in what was a woeful game. Paddy Murphy hit the post in the 80th minute and that was the only highlight of the whole game. Castleburn City really need to get back to winning ways soon. One team that can’t seem to stop winning is Castleburn United, they were at home to Westhill Rangers and went ahead in the 4th minute after Wilf Stoneman pounced on a bad back pass, Stoneman in for the injured Norman Hampton made the most of getting his chance and grabbed another goal in the 89th minute to give United a 2-0 win.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Danefield United beat Landchester Town 3-0 with Peter Parker scoring and Kevin Taylor scoring twice and Blackport Rovers went down 1-0 at home to Marshness.

A truly great FA Cup derby game was played out this week, with the mighty Melchester Rovers at home to 3rd Division Melchester City in the 4th Round of the FA Cup. The game was an all ticket affair and no seats were left untaken. The match itself lived up to the hype surrounding it and started at a tremendous pace with Delroy of City bringing about the first serious save of the game by Cat Carter. The first half passed in a blur with both sides playing some outstanding football, then on the 43rdth minute City’s big centre back Murdoch McLeod brought down Roy Race and Rovers were awarded a free kick in a very dangerous position. Up stepped Blackie Gray and he fired the ball at the goal. Former Rover’s keeper Tubby Morton brought off a fantastic fingertip save and the ball rebounded off the post. Ronnie Hansen hoofed the ball away just as Roy Race and Jumbo Trudgeon were about to pounce onto the rebound. The ball flew up field and City’s Chris Dylan knocked it on to Chalky White whose first time touch found Cosmo Washington in acres of space and bearing down on the Rover’s goal. Washington coolly slotted the ball beyond Cat Carter and City were one up on the stroke of half time. City fans sang and danced all through the half time interval.
After the restart City were well on top and Rovers were searching desperately for some inspiration and then it came, in the 81st minute Blackie Gray played a lovely one-two with Jumbo Trudgeon and Gray fired home the equaliser. In an attempt to win the game inside ninety minutes, Ben Galloway brought off Vernon Eliot and sent on Supersub Roger Dixon. But neither side added any more goals before the referee’s whistle indicated full-time. Extra time came and went in another blur with both sides searching for the winner.
The all Melchester derby had gone to penalties. Jumbo Trudgeon stepped up to take the first and scored (1-0), and then Cosmo Washington missed his (still 1-0). Blackie Gray missed his (1-0) and Delroy scored (1-1). Both Roy Race for Rovers and Cliff Wilson for City scored to make it 2-2. Jimmy Slade made it 3-2 and Chris Dylan hit the woodwork (3-2). Then up strode Lofty Peak who missed (3-2 still) but Chalkie White didn’t and the score was level at 3-3. Very coolly Rover’s defender Ralf Derry slotted home the next to make it 4-3. Then there was a hush throughout the stadium as Ronnie Hansen stepped up to take the next penalty – he missed! .
The Rovers fans celebrated.
Rovers won a memorable game 4-3 on penalties, 5-3 overall and have progressed into the next round.
The scores from the other 4th Round games were as follows:
Castleburn City 3 Mansford County 0
Otterburn 1 Thamesbank 2
Eastoke United 2 Melboro 0
Danefield United 1 Shenton United 6 (Terry Tyler scored 5)

Rampant Rovers showed no respect for the famous white shirts and black shorts of their visitors Merseaport at the weekend. Merseaport with the likes of Gary Fane, Danny Richards, Bert Hardstone and Nicky Hart in their line-up were hammered at Mel Park. A hat trick by Jumbo Trudgeon saw Melchester Rovers to a comfortable 3-0 win and more importantly a jump up to 6th position in the table.
Everpool City had their top strikers Bobby Booth and Tommy Keston unavailable due to injury and had to bring in several youngsters for their home match against Eastoke United. The Blues very first attack saw Willy Douglas hit the bar with a terrific shot and Norman Flint pouncing on the rebound to slam the ball home into the net. Everpool City scored again before half time this time through one of their youngsters Johnny Endem and they maintained that lead throughout the rest of the match to win 2-0. Everpool stay second in the league, four points behind the leaders.
Elsewhere in Division One, Melboro won again this time 3-0 at home to Walford Rovers and Kingsbay beat Highwood Athletic 4-0. Kingsbay’s new signing from Carford City – Drifter Donaldson scored for them.
In Division Two, Castleburn City travelled to Brampton Keys and were completely outplayed. Don Well and Bert Nordhal scored for the Keys. City haven’t won in three games and have slipped to 3rd in the table.
Castleburn United were at Kingsford City and within six minutes they had captain Phil Hughes sent off for a professional foul on Kingsford star Chico Panchero. United’s manager Eric Mills reshuffled his side bringing off two attackers and sending on two defensive midfielders. These tactics paid off in a big way as United absorbed everything that Kingsford threw at them and on the stroke of full time scored through Miles Hewitt to claim all three points.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Blackport Rovers had a much-needed win beating Hawkmoor at the Dockside 7-1 with Nipper Lawrence scoring twice. Danefield United won away at Fairydale with Peter Parker getting the only goal of the game.

Div. Four – Welbeck Wanderers/Linfield Athletic/Bamford Athletic all have the same number of points.

Rovers faced a difficult game this week away at Molton United. Molton managed by Terry O’Brien and with the likes of Bob Banks in goal, Jon Stark in defence, Willie Petticrew in midfield and a strike force of Bobby Paterson, Pete Cullen and Don Stroud, have in the past provided tough opposition for Rovers and this game was no exception with very few opportunities for either side to score. Rovers did however break the deadlock in the 40th minute with the only goal of the game coming from a Ralph Derry corner thumped home by Mervyn Wallace. Molton should have got the equaliser in the second half when Willie Pettigrew raced through to shoot only for Cat Carter to pull off a brilliant save. Rovers are now 5th in the table.
Everpool City still without top strikers Tommy Keston and Bobby Booth were at home to Cranville United and despite missing these key players ran out a comfortable 3-nil winner with goals from Johnny Endem, Willy Douglas and Peter Pitt.
Elsewhere in Division One, Melboro lost at Lenfield Town (3-1) but still stay top, Kingsbay were beaten 4-0 by Shenton United (Terry Tyler scoring twice) and Terry West scored again for Eastoke United as they beat Oak Commoners 2-0.

Castleburn United won their match at home to Millborough 3-0 and all three goals were scored by Jack Chelsey. The first a lovely curling shot, the second a wonderful strike and the third a well-directed header.

Blackport Rovers and Nipper Lawrence have climbed to 15th having this week beaten Mandover 3-0 thanks to a Barry Day hat trick. Poor Hawkmoor are rooted at the bottom with only 6 points and are most likely to be relegated. Ironcastle, Otterburn, Marshness, Abbottown Albion and Westhill Rangers are also involved in the relegation struggle.
DIVISION THREE
Melchester City continue to dominate winning 3-2 at Stockburn with goals from Blackburn, Wilson and Millar. City having played 22 games have 55 points and are 11 points ahead of their nearest rivals Stambridge City. Thatchem United are only just above the relegation zone after having been beaten at home by Elbury Wanderers this week. Thornton Villa, Crampton United, Eastport Wanderers and Longwich City occupy the four bottom places.
DIVISION FOUR
The top of this Division is extremely close with only 4 points separating the top 8 teams. Welbeck Wanderers and Linfield Athletic with 43 points apiece head the table, then we have Fordhampton, Chaggerton, Freshwell Rovers, Bamford Athletic, Holverton Athletic and Keysborough all competing for promotion.
I hope you all found the update useful.

Rovers win again, this time 1-nil away at Eastoke United. Melchester did leave it very late though, having had over 75% ball possession. Jumbo Trudgeon scored in the 90th minute to seal yet another victory and keep Rovers on the heels of the league leaders. League leaders Melboro won 4-1 at Merseaport and Everpool City (2nd in the league) beat Deans Park 2-0 with both goals from rising star Johnny Endem.
Lenfield Town stayed 3rd in the table following a 2-1 win at home to Sandport. Melchester Rovers remained in 4th place. Top result of the day in Division One was Seaford Athletic’s 6-0 drubbing off bottom side Weston Villa, a scoreline made all the more remarkable by the fact that Seaford’s golden boy Jimmy Worth scored all six goals.
The other scores in Division One were:
Thamesbank 2 Kingsbay 1
Portdean County 0 Shenton United 5
Walford Rovers 0 Highwood Athletic 0
Molton United 7 Carford City 2
Shermall Athletic 0 Tynecaster 3
Oak Commoners 3 Cranville United 1
In Division Two, Castleburn United stay top following a easy 3-nil win at home to Landchester Town (goals from Jack Chelsey, Norman Hampton and Brian Hedges). Danefield United remain 2nd thanks to a 4-nil win at home to Grantham United (Peter Parker grabbed a hat trick). Castleburn City stay 3rd following a 2-0 victory over Nipper Lawrence’s Blackport Rovers. Knocker Wood was outstanding for City grabbing one goal and setting up the other for big Mike Duncan.
Division Three is still headed by Melchester City as Cliff Wilson grabbed a hat trick in City’s 3-nil win at home to Cookborough. Closest rivals Stambridge City 11 points behind City beat Edgincombe 4-0 while Thatchem United still hover dangerously near the relegation places after losing again at Eversea (2-nil).
In Division Four, Linfield Athletic beat Keysboro 5-0 and now head the Division by one point from Fordhampton (who beat Lemster City 3-0).
In Scotland, Princes Park lost 2-nil at Ratch Rovers.

The last 16 in the European Cup played the 1st leg of Round 3 this week, with the English league represented by Melchester Rovers and Everpool City.
Melchester Rovers travelled to France to play Levanville. Rovers coasted to a 2-nil win, with Blackie Gray scoring mid-way through the first half with a wickedly hit long-range shot that bounced cruelly up off the pitch and over the keepers waiting arms. Melchester’s second goal didn’t come until the 90th minute when another wickedly hit long-range shot from Jumbo Trudgeon fooled the keeper again. Melchester are now favourites to progress into the next round.
Unfortunately Everpool’s trip to Portugal to play Corados wasn’t so rewarding. Swedish striker Arnie Tonburg was in riveting form and he scored twice to give the Portuguese team a 2-0 win and ensure a very difficult task for Everpool City in the return leg as they attempt to progress in this tournament.
In the other games of the 1st leg of Round 3:
AC Monza won 2-0 at home against fellow Italian side Mondliari.
Stadia Batori of Italy drew 2-2 away at French side Douyen Racing.
Spanish side Athletico Zamara beat the Dutch team Reedhoven 1-0 in Holland.
Paco Diaz starred for Real Santana of Spain, scoring twice as Real won 2-0 in Germany against Flaudermitz.
Home side Moulenne Racing of France beat Germany’s Rassburg 1-0.
And finally AC Gironde drew 0-0 at home to Nettruno of Italy.
All of the return legs will be reported on as the 16 teams strive to reach the Quarter Finals of the European Cup.

Melchester Rovers continued their good run in the league with a convincing win against Everpool City. Rovers won 2-nil with Jumbo Trudgeon opening the scoring after a low drive by Roy Race was blocked by Everpool’s keeper Ted Anderson, but unfortunately for Everpool Anderson failed to hold onto the ball and Jumbo pounced to slot it into the back of the net. Jumbo struck again in the second half with a wonderful long-range strike. Melchester Rovers have now climbed to 3rd in the table. Everpool City remained 2nd.
Melboro beat Molton United 5-1 to stay top, and Lenfield Town who were 3rd, lost at Highwood Athletic. Billy Dane netted for Highwood. Kingsbay beat Portdean County 7-nil, Tynecaster lost at home to Eastoke United 7-nil (Terry West scored twice) and Sandport beat Seaford Athletic 4-3.
In Division Two, Castleburn United stay top and remain the only unbeaten team in the whole league after a dull and boring 0-0 away at Fairydale. Castleburn City climbed to 2nd in the table winning 2-0 at Abbottown Albion. All square at half time, City forged ahead in the second-half with a thirty-yard strike from Knocker Woods and then another by Woods five minutes from full-time. Knocker Wood’s second goal was pure skill. Woods collected the ball on the edge of the opposing penalty area, waltzed around several defenders and deftly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper – pure magic.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Blackport Rovers beat Danefield United 3-0 (Barry Day, Paddy Reagen and Nipper Lawrence all scoring). Brampton Keys beat Ironcastle 3-0 at home. Danefield drop to 3rd in the table and Brampton are 4th.
Melchester City are still 8 points ahead of their nearest rivals in Division Three despite having lost 1-0 at Burndean. Thatchem United recorded a much-needed win with 2 goals from Tich and Giraffe.
In Division Four it still remains close with Fordhampton, Welbeck Wanderers, Linfield Athletic, Holverton Athletic and Chaggerton only separated by 3 points.
In Scotland, Princes Park lost 2-1 at Highland Wanderers. The only good news for Princes Park is that Highland are the league leaders and Hamish Balfour scored for Park.

Melchester’s League Cup campaign continues. Rovers faced Castleburn City in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup and scrapped through after a hard-fought contest that saw Castleburn City having both Johnny Lea and Mike Duncan red carded for dangerous tackles in the first half. City currently flying high in Division One were hoping to showcase their exciting style of play but after the first sending off in the 10th minute City played defensively and never threatened the Rovers goal. So stubborn was City’s defence that at the end of full-time the score still remained at 0-0. In extra time Graham Shaw on for the injured Roy Race slotted home the only goal of the game in the 103rd minute.
Everpool City entertained Eversea from Division Three in their Quarter Final and threw everything including the kitchen sink at the visitors. The Blues wasted chance after chance, hit the post several times and in the first half of extra time even had a penalty taken by Bobby Booth saved. Then in the second period of extra time the hearts of the Eversea fans was broken by a fine strike from Willy Douglas. Everpool City 1 Eversea 0.
Castleburn United were at home to Molton United in their Quarter Final and although Molton were for long periods of the game the better side, a goal by Castleburn’s Norman Hampton in the 54th minute settled things and put Castleburn United threw to the Semi-finals.
The remaining Quarter Final was won convincingly by Melboro who travelled to Mersea of Division Three. Both Jean Charles De Ketelaere and Willie Mulligan bagged hat tricks to give Melboro a 6-nil victory and they now line up with Melchester Rovers, Everpool City and Castleburn United in the League Cup semi-finals.
